Once Upon a Deadpool: Details Released on PG-13 Cut

Now, according to Deadline, that cut of the film is called Once Upon a Deadpool. While some have seen this as a quick cash grab, there are some altruistic motives that come with this toned-down release. And what better time to feel charitable than the holidays.

The new footage was shot in one day, and manages to make sense of the movie without any of its R-rated content.

It's easy to assume that director David Leitch simply sliced up Deadpool 2, spread all the pieces out on the editing room floor, and left behind the bits that earned the sequel pic its R-rating in order to create the upcoming PG-13 version. Those are massive figures, all but ensuring there will be a third Deadpool movie sometime down the road. And yet, Fox has still made an appeal to a younger audience with a variety of marketing tie-ins with 7-11.

The original R-rated cut has been edited to earn a PG-13 rating and make it watchable for younger teens who are on a holiday break from school and not quite old enough to have seen the R-rated version on their own (or fearless enough to sneak in, but we didn't say that).

"Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006", Reynolds told Deadline on Monday. "I've said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said "Yes" on two conditions", Reynolds shared with Deadline. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. The new footage, eight scenes in total, will riff upon the bedtime-story setup of the 80s cult classic, with The Wonder Years' Fred Savage reprising his role. "The second condition took some explaining..."

But the re-release isn't just so the young'uns can be corrupted by Deadpool. You can see a still from those new scenes above.

As Reynolds puts it, Fox has been gunning for a PG-13 film for over a decade now, and year after year, the actor has denied the studio its great desire.

That's because Once Upon A Deadpool has been repurposed as a Christmas movie. Of course, there are also some new scenes included as well, which Deadline says are in the "form of a framing sequence that was conceived by Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick". Apparently, "the response to the PG-13 repackaging is also being watched closely by the leadership at Disney and its Marvel Studios and may inform the way they incorporate Deadpool into their plans". Well I got good news for you.

Once Upon A Deadpool hits theaters on December 12, 2018.
