Iran said on Tuesday it had so far been able to sell as much oil as it needs despite usa pressure, but it urged European countries opposed to us sanctions to do more to shield Iran, as Russian Federation and Turkey also voiced their objections.

The Trump administration's tough new sanctions on Iran have taken effect, but eight major importers of Iranian oil are being spared from immediate penalties. "This waters down the integrity of sanctions and communicates to the rest of the world that others do not have to abide by the U.S. restrictions", he said. Iranian state television aired footage of air defense systems and anti-aircraft batteries in two-day military maneuvers underway across a vast stretch of the country's north.

"We hope a new agreement with Iran is possible", he added.

The measures are the second batch the U.S. administration reinstated since President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the nuclear deal in May despite objections from close allies in Europe.

"We are making it abundantly clear to the Iranian regime that they will face mounting financial isolation until they fundamentally change their destabilizing behavior", Mnuchin told reporters.

"We are in the war situation", President Hassan Rouhani said in a television address as the sanctions snapped into place.

The US says it wants to reduce Iran's oil exports to zero - a goal Mr Book says will depend on how closely the sanctions are observed.

Turkey is one of the key destinations for Iranian crude, accounting for more than a quarter of Turkey's daily average imports of around 830,000 barrels, according to data from the market regulator.

The United States again restricted Iran's oil and financial industry on Monday.

"We believe that China's normal cooperation (with Iran) within global law is legal and legitimate, and this shall be respected", Hua said.

Rouhani said four countries had approached him during his visit to NY for the UN General Assembly in September, offering to mediate with the USA but he turned them down. "Yesterday, Saddam was in front us, today Trump is front of us".

A new round of punishing sanctions on Iran's energy, banking and shipping sectors went into force overnight on Monday.

On Saturday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the reimposition of US sanctions, saying Trump had hurt USA standing in the world and that Iran would ultimately come out as the victor.

"Our politics is very domestic - it's not as if Washington coughs and we get a cold", he said.

Protecting the terms of the JCPOA was important not just for Iran but the global community, he added, making it necessary for other countries to counter not just the USA sanctions but the ideas behind them. The United States said on November 2 it will temporarily allow eight importers to keep buying Iranian oil.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, reported a cyberattack targeting the country's communication infrastructure, blaming the purported attack on Israel.

"The Iranian people have had 39 years of economic mismanagement".

"Permitting these specific activities to continue is an interim measure that preserves oversight of Iran's civil nuclear program", according to the statement, which has sparked fierce pushback from Iran hawks.

The European Union, France, Germany and Britain said they regretted the United States decision and would seek to protect European companies doing legitimate business with Tehran.

Oil is Iran's main source of income.

Asked if the United States had firm commitments from India and China to stop all oil purchases from Iran within six months, Pompeo replied: "Watch what we do".
