When a customer stops by one of these 7-Eleven stores, the "Scan & Pay" feature will automatically show up in the 7-Eleven Rewards app, which can be dowloaded on Android or iPhone smartphones.

"For us, it was important to figure out how to continue to drive convenience in the digital age", said Gurmeet Singh, 7-Eleven's chief digital officer and chief information officer. When you're near a pilot store, a pop-up will say "start scanning", then you can scan the items you want and pay for them on the app. It also connects with the 7Rewards loyalty program, so customers can find out about deals and promotions. How can we make every 7-Eleven a breeze?

It's the latest big retailer to enable its own scan-and-go mobile capabilities, while giant companies like Amazon and Walmart-owned Sam's Club go cashierless, where customers no longer even have the option to wait in line. Once they pay for their purchases, customers scan the QR code that appears on the confirmation screen at the Scan & Pay station and go.

7-Eleven has 67,000-plus stores in 17 countries, including 11,800 in North America, according to the company. "We are ready to adapt to the changing consumer patterns and changing demands of the consumer".

7-Eleven is following Sam's Club and Amazon to offer a cashierless experience for its customers...some of them, at least. The scan-and-go technology requires the user to get involved.

To meet the other convenience needs of today's consumers, 7-Eleven this year also introduced the 7Now delivery service in markets including Dallas, New York and Washington D.C. It's also experimented with using augmented reality (AR) to engage shoppers. "How do they onboard, and how do they use it?" said Singh.

"This is 7-Eleven's play at amplifying convenience", said Catherine Lang, an analyst at Kantar Consulting who researches discount and convenience stores.
