"Will you join us?", DeSantis wrote on Twitter.

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

The day before the election, MSNBC aired a graphic that showed Gillum narrowly beating DeSantis, with 49.4 percent to his 48.8 percent.

More than 5.2 million voters cast ballots ahead of Election Day in the battleground state, and records show that Democrats have a slight edge.

Gillum also spoke to the crowd about the issues that caused him to run for office and said his message to Trump and DeSantis is clear, "The politics of hatred and separation have come to an end".

"This sounds like an oxymoron, but hear me out". "I know a lot of people are waiting until tomorrow".

Thirty-nine percent of Floridians registered to vote did so early, either in person or by mail, according to state election figures.

Hans Hasell, another political science professor at Florida State University, said DeSantis's campaign strategy was likely more concerned with trying to get conservative voters to turn up at the polls than it was with trying to get liberal voters to change their minds. Despite implications that DeSantis was racially insensitive - an idea he angrily disputed during a debate - he was able to win the state that Trump carried in 2016.

"That's just who he is". Footage of the exchange went viral across the nation, let alone in Florida.

Holding his baby son in his arms, and with his two older children at his side, Gillum expressed satisfaction at a campaign he says was run with class and focused on the policy instead of nonsense.

During the campaign, Gillum repeatedly launched accusations of racism against DeSantis, which DeSantis firmly denied.

"We understand that a good economy is important, but if your communities are not safe, all of that is for naught". The Florida-based group engages in anti-Israel activism, including the promotion of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against the Jewish state.

Before Tuesday, Trump would visit the state three times to rally for DeSantis.

"I will protect Florida's future, particularly Florida's economic momentum".

"You need to be able to work with the president", DeSantis said last month, saying he would be "better positioned to advance Florida's priorities" due to his "productive relationship with the administration".

Republican Ron DeSantis defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum in Florida's hotly contested race for Governor.

DeSantis along with his wife, Casey DeSantis, a Jacksonville television personality, will vote Tuesday morning in Ponte Vedra Beach.
