But the Football Association made it clear that Wayne Rooney will get the captain's armband and will only make a cameo appearance.

And although there have been complaints from fans that it cheapens that honour of playing for England to give out grace-and-favour caps, Kane has no problems with recognising a player who for an entire generation led the starting line for the Three Lions.

England captain Harry Kane wants Wayne Rooney to be given a fitting farewell when the forward represents his country for the final time next week. "He was captain when I got into the squad and sure, if he plays, of course he will be the captain".

"He deserves it and was a great captain for us", he said. It's a real good thing for everyone to be a part of.

"I do not know too much about how he is going to do it or how long he is going to play", Kane told Sky Sports after Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. It's a great experience to have for the younger players in our team.

Rooney will pick up a 120th senior cap in a one-off appearance on 15 November as England supporters are given the chance to hand the country's all-time leading goalscorer a proper send-off. "Wayne was there from when I was 20, he helped me right through my England career".

Shilton, who has 125 caps for England, tweeted: "I don't agree with giving Wayne Rooney a cap against the United States of America caps should be given on merit!"

Despite not scoring in his last seven England games, Kane himself has already racked up 19 goals in 34 internationals.

The 33-year-old, who now plays for DC United in Major League Soccer, has not represented his country in nearly two years and his return has given rise to heated debate that is sure to intensify after the FA's revelation about where the money raised from ticket sales will go.

Kane says he and his team-mates can not wait to be reunited with Rooney for one last time.
