Because it was the bars' weekly College Country Night, many of Ian's victims were students of Pepperdine University.

At least 10 to 15 people also were injured, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

One of the victims, 22-year-old Cody Coffman, has been identified by his father, Jason.

The extent of the surviving victims' injuries wasn't immediately known.

The bar was holding a college country nights event between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Wednesday night, its website states.

Kuredjian said that shots were still being fired when sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene.

"I saw him point to the back of the cash register ... and he just kept firing".

"I look up - the security guard is dead".

Dean said Long was veteran who had served in the Marine Corps.

He joined the Marines in 2008 and rose to the rank of corporal before leaving active service in 2013, Marine spokesman Joseph Butterfield wrote in an email.

Dean said police had previous run-ins with Long, including a call to his home where he was acting irrationally.

"They knew they had to take action, and they went in and did what they had to do", Dean said.

He was armed with a.45-caliber Glock 21 handgun that he had legally purchased in Simi Valley, as well as a "smoke device", he said. "We believe he shot himself".

Colleagues of Helus describe him as a friend and an exceptional man and officer.

Police had multiple run-ins with Long in the past, Dean said.

"While I was running away, people were dropping around me", Spady said.

Helus had been at the department for almost three decades, and was planning to retire within the next year, the sheriff said, choking back tears.

"It's been a rough night for all of us", Buschow said, according to the report. The suspect was later found dead inside the bar. "Just an awesome investigator". California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times.

Friends are remembering a USA sheriff's sergeant who was killed trying to stop a shooting rampage at a California bar as a "cop's cop" who didn't hesitate to run toward danger. "There were probably 12 shots before I got out the front door". "I'll talk to you later, '" he told reporters.

The Ventura County sheriff said Sgt. Ron Helus was talking with his wife when he found out about the shooting.

Gunn added: 'A lot of people in the Route 91 situation go here. On Oct. 27, a gunman killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. He said he had assumed Long must be getting treatment of some kind. We are still trying to reach most of the girls but the people we know got out.

"That's a pretty challenging question", Sheriff Dean said.

US President Donald Trump said on Twitter that he has been "fully briefed on the awful shooting".
