In a statement Thursday, Northern Territory Police said a 19-year-old man and woman had been found, along with a three-year-old boy, next to the vehicle 350 kilometers (217 miles) northwest of Alice Springs in the Willowra district.

But police say it's possible a 12-year-old boy was also a passenger in the vehicle and has not been located.

A formal identification is yet to be undertaken to confirm if the body is that of the boy, who was believed to have been a passenger in the auto.

The bodies of a man and a woman, both aged 19, and their three-year-old son were found 4.5km away from their broken-down auto on Wednesday.

It's thought the trio may have died from exposure after they were stranded near Willowra on Wednesday, ABC News reported.

"Although police have no information that suggests there were other passengers in the auto, we will continue a precautionary land and air search until we are satisfied that all areas of interest have been sufficiently canvassed", he said.

Superintendent Nobbs has said earlier that the four occupants of the auto were seen leaving Willowra on November 2 and were bound for nearby Yarra Yarra.

"He is quite distraught about what he has found", said Supt Jody Nobbs.

Remnants of food and water were also discovered at the scene.

NT Police were alerted to the deaths, which were not believed to be suspicious, when a person walked into a local health clinic and raised the alarm just after midday yesterday.

"Ensure that when you travel your vehicle is in a fit state, that you have sufficient supplies including water and a first aid kit, and that someone is aware of what your travel itinerary is, when you intend to leave, arrive and your anticipated routes", he said.

"He will be a critical part of the investigation".

This morning, police said a 12-year-old boy, who they believed was with the group, was not found among the dead.

Police have asked for anyone who spots the boy or has information about his whereabouts to contact them immediately.
