BOURKE STREET CHAOS: Car explodes, man with knife shot by police

Victoria Police responded to a major incident on Friday afternoon on Bourke Street in Melbourne, Australia.

The auto burst into flames near the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets about 4.20pm on Friday and while the vehicle was quickly extinguished, reports soon followed of a knife attack.

The suspected attacker was shot by the police and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

"Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage", police said in a statement.

Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton confirmed the suspect had stabbed three people before lunging at police.

Another person at the scene said: "I saw people running, screaming". The condition of the surviving pair is unknown.

One of the victims has died, while the others have been taken to hospital.

One of them has succumbed to injuries, police said.

'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

The area is cordoned off and people are asked to avoid the area. Large spots of what appears to be blood are near the body alongside a pair of men's black lace-up shoes.

The attacker reportedly torched his auto before the vehicle burst into flames.

Counter-terrorism police have been notified, and they are investigating, although there is no immediate indication the incident is terror related.

"It's so chaotic", witness Sarah told Tom Elliott.

Witnesses said they heard a big bang and images appeared to show a vehicle on fire.

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD".

"And then I heard one loud bang".

Police are urging any witnesses to attend Melbourne West police station to provide a statement, while anyone with vision or photographs from the incident is being urged to upload footage to the Victoria Police Facebook site.
