Here's what we know about the people who died in the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

Borderline, which bills itself as the "biggest dance floor in town", had been hosting an event called "College Country Night" when the shooting occurred.

A sheriff said 13 people were killed, including a sheriff's sergeant and the gunman, after a shooting inside a crowded Southern California bar late Wednesday.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters Thursday that Long had served in Afghanistan. The gun had a special device that permitted it to hold more bullets than usual. The device is illegal in California.

Our sources say investigators discovered the messages on Long's page several hours after the shooting and contacted Instagram to delete his page. He added, "Obviously he had something going on in his head that would cause him to do something like this".

It is the latest mass killing in the United States, and comes less than two weeks after 11 people were killed in a shooting at a Jewish religious center.

"It's particularly ironic that after surviving the worst mass shooting in modern history, he went on to be killed in his hometown", his father told the Ventura County Star.

The bar is a few miles from California Lutheran University, and is a popular spot for students on such nights.

Police captain Garo Kuredjian told reporters that cops received a call that shots had been fired at the venue at 11.20pm local time.

"I saw someone throw a bar stool through the window and I followed suit and I threw a bar stool through the window and we just pushed people towards the bar, so that they weren't in the direct line of sight of him and then just filed as many people, everyone that was there, out through that back window", he explained.

Sergeant Ron Helus is among the victims killed. Helus was taken to a hospital where he died on Thursday morning. Dean said Helus was the first to go in and was immediately hit with multiple gunshots.

Suddenly, a man wearing a black trench coat and sunglasses approached the door and shot the security guard at the entrance.

Hanson told the Associated Press he had heard shouting and loud noises coming from the Longs' home. "I don't want thoughts", his mother, Susan Schmidt-Orfanos, said earlier.

Long joined the Marines at 18 and was married as a 19-year-old in Honolulu in June 2009, according to military and court records.

In a tweet, President Donald Trump applauded the response of police and extended blessings to the victims and their families.

An American flag hung on the garage at Long's home on Thursday as law enforcement gathered outside.

The Marine Corps said in a statement it "extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims in this senseless tragedy".
