There have been plenty of Democrats who have called for Whitaker to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, as Sessions did.

Demonstrators in New York City chanted slogans including "Hands off Mueller" and "Nobody's above the law" before marching downtown.

Crowds also turned out in Chicago; Greensboro, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn., and many other places.

Wes Boone carried a sign quoting Graham's words from July 2017: "If Jeff Sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to pay".

Whitaker had previously criticized Mueller's probe. Sessions had recused himself from overseeing the investigation. He said he had been talking to his colleagues about pushing ahead with investigations, starting with Mr Trump's tax returns. She said she was protesting the "forced" resignation of Sessions and Trump's dubious appointment of an acting attorney general.

The local protest was spearheaded by Capital Area Indivisible, an Augusta-area group that is the local chapter organization that resists the agendas of Republicans and President Donald Trump, and Suit Up Maine, a progressive advocacy group.

The Mueller investigation has so far produced 32 criminal charges and four guilty pleas from Trump associates.

But that was not the view of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who on Wednesday warned House Democrats that any investigations of the president by their new majority in the ensuing two years "might not be smart strategy".

The protests came in response to President Trump installing longtime ally Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General, taking over oversight of the Mueller investigation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

She said Graham's newest remarks on the Sessions replacement is "a tap dance that's getting old".

With or without a recusal, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say Mueller's investigation should proceed without interference with Republicans, adding that it's gone on too long and Democrats applying the most heat. He said "there was so much smoke" surrounding Clinton that it made flawless sense for Trump Jr.to take a meeting at which he expected to receive dirt on her.

"You would always take that meeting". Trump, a frequent critic of Acosta, said the reporter was a "very unprofessional guy" and insisted: "I don't think he's a smart person, but he's got a loud voice".

"Sometimes the voters need to do more than vote", she said. Whitaker wrote. "If he doesn't, then Mueller's investigation will eventually start to look like a political fishing expedition".

Christie, a longtime friend of the president's, endorsed Trump after dropping out of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Whitaker's stances on the Robert Mueller probe and a number of other hot-button topics have drawn criticism.

Robert Mueller should not be allowed to investigate Trump's finances. Protestors anxious Whitaker would use his new position to stifle the investigation before its conclusion.

Whitaker publicly criticized Mueller's investigation before he was hired as Sessions' chief of staff past year. Whitaker accompanied the tweet with his own comment to his followers: "Worth a Read". He said there was no evidence of collusion.

Moscow denies interfering in the 2016 election.
