City Of Malibu Under Mandatory Evacuation Order As SoCal Fires Grow Overnight

Only a day after it began, the fire near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers). Paradise is popular with retirees, and has a population of about 27,000.

As surreal as those details often sound, they are a natural by-product of a town where entertainment is the principal industry and where the fires are focused on an area, Malibu, which is populated by numerous town's rich and famous.

"This was a rapidly moving fire", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record.

The massive blaze spread north Friday, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Elsewhere, the Hill Fire in Ventura County's Santa Rosa Valley had charred about 6,000 acres (2,428 hectares) as of Friday evening, according to Cal Fire.

While stars including Alyssa Milano and Guillermo del Toro gave status updates and expressed their thanks to have escaped unscathed, Caitlyn Jenner wasn't as lucky, with TMZ reporting Friday that she'd lost her home as the fire marched across the hills of Malibu.

Accidents gridlocked routes out of the town and residents abandoned their cars and fled on foot carrying children and pets, Reuters quoted local officials as saying.


"It's devastating. It's like 'welcome to hell, '" resident Cynthia Ball, said about the dual disasters while she was outside the teen centre serving as a shelter for evacuees. "I took a couple of videos of myself just to kind of have something to talk to and just tell my loved ones that I love them", she said. "People started getting out of their vehicles and running".

"It was absolutely dark", said resident Mike Molloy, who said he made a split decision based on the wind to leave Thursday morning, packing only the minimum and joining a sea of other vehicles.

"We're trying to get as many people out as quickly as possible and save as many lives as we can", he said.

Less Sun and more rain should normally see any potential blazes put out before they get the chance to rise.

On Thursday it was in the path of one of three wildfires advancing through California, driven by strong winds. The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted a list of evacuation centers on Friday for those leaving their homes; they include the Borchard Community Center, Rancho Santa Susana Rec Center, Camarillo Community Center, 1000 Oaks Teen Center, Goebel Community Center, Taft High School and Pierce College.

Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy made a plea at a fire news conference to residents to help their neighbors during this hard time.
