Dead In California Wildfire, Hollywood Celebs Evacuated

Fire officials say the Woolsey and Hill fires could force the evacuations of about 148,000 and structural losses are expected to be significant.

People reported much of the community of 30,000 people has gone up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement centre. According to Ventura County Fire Department, the county and Los Angeles County have been evacuated or are being evacuated of 148,000 residents.

McLean estimated that the lost buildings numbered in the thousands in Paradise, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) northeast of San Francisco.

"The town is devastated, everything is destroyed", said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott Maclean.

By all accounts, the scrambled evacuation of Paradise was harrowing.

Shari Bernacett said she and her husband tried to get people to leave the mobile home park they manage in Paradise and had minutes to evacuate.

Five people have died during massive wildfires in the USA state of California, a representative of the Butte County Sheriff's office told Sputnik.

On Friday morning, gruesomely burned cars littered the side of the road.

The 20,000-acre (8,100-hectare) fire north of Sacramento started in the Plumas National Forest on Thursday and quickly engulfed the town of Paradise.

Four hospital employees were briefly trapped in the basement and rescued by California Highway Patrol officers, Kinney said.

"F-ing Paradise is gone", she said.

Kelly Lee called shelters looking for her husband's 93-year-old grandmother, Dorothy Herrera, who was last heard from on Thursday morning.

Acting California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area and requested a federal emergency declaration, saying that high winds and dry brush presented ongoing danger.

Mandatory evacuations were already in effect north of the 101 Freeway from Valley Vista to Reyes Adobe (areas of Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Westlake Village).

Cindy Huge, an American Red Cross representative, told that station that even though the center is at capacity with 250 residents, no one in need will be turned away.

Among the celebrity homes reportedly damaged - if not destroyed - was the home of Caitlyn Jenner, who posted an Instagram video reporting that she was in a safe house, but wasn't sure what has become of her home.
