The number of stores had peaked in 2012 at 4,000, including its Sears Canada division that was later spun off.

The network points out other retail companies are also closing brick-and-mortar stores, including Toys R Us, Bon-Ton and others.

The Fairbanks store joins a list of 142 closed down Sears and Kmart locations which were deemed unprofitable and shut down, in order for the company to survive in the process of Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The latest round of closings include the last Kmart in Chicago, at 3443 W. Addison St.in the city's Avondale neighborhood, and a store in Springfield.

Fewer than 90,000 people still worked for Sears Holdings earlier this year, down from 350,000 in decades past.

Sears in the Boynton Beach Mall is among the latest stores to be slated for closure by Sears Holding, which filed for bankruptcy reorganization in mid-October.

Company officials have been negotiating for loans that would allow it to continuing operating while seeking a buyer for the company and to avoid liquidation.

A Sears Holdings spokesperson could not be reached immediately to comment on the closure or the number of workers affected.
