Cameron Davis and Matt Jones are the only Australians to have made the weekend at the Mayakoba Classic at Playa del Carmen near Cancun in Mexico but they are a long way from the lead of Matt Kuchar who produced consecutive rounds of 64 to lead by two over rookie Cameron Champ.

Kuchar birdied five of his opening six holes on his way to a second successive 64 at El Camaleon Golf Club to get to 14 under and pull clear of nearest challenger Cameron Champ. The 40-year-old is looking for his first PGA Tour win in more than four years and has 32 top-10 finishes since his last victory at the 2014 RBC Heritage. He said the relaxed atmosphere at the Mexican resort contributed to his productive day. "So to be able to bring the family to enjoy some vacation time, it's a bit of a working vacation", Kuchar said. "I was just trying to execute each shot at a time".

When Zach Johnson's caddie had to tap out of a round due to dehydration, his playing partner Matt Kuchar had quite the suggestion for a replacement.

Funnily enough, Kuchar himself reportedly needed an emergency caddie heading into the tournament, since he was a late commitment.

Bozzelli made four straight birdies on his second nine to propel him into contention. Bozzelli, 27, and Hickok, 26, also had seven birdies apiece.

Three-time major victor Jordan Spieth, playing his last tournament of the calendar year, missed the cut.

"I knew Sybi was in the crowd, I knew she had caddied for me before and was friendly with Zach Johnson, and figured she would be good to handle it, and Zach would go easy on her".

"I've been out there, and I've worked my way up".

Top-ranked Ariya Jutanugarn, who started the day with a four-stroke lead, sits one shot back after a 1-under 71.

Anirban Lahiri shot his best round in over three months. American Rickie Fowler headlined another big group on 66.
