Harlem man is largest lottery jackpot victor in NY state history

A Manhattan man came forward on Wednesday with the winning Powerball ticket to collect his jackpot of $343.9 million-the largest lottery prize ever in NY.

"I had to play this morning before I came here", Robert Bailey, 67, told reporters at the Resorts World Casino in Queens Wednesday, holding up his betting slips.

While there's a superstition that says lottery winners end up broke in a few short years, Bailey does have plans to take some of his winnings to gamble in Sin City, he said.

He chose the lump sum payment and will take home a little more than $125 million after taxes, CBS2's Clark Fouraker reported.

His numbers matched all six numbers chosen during the October 27 Powerball drawing.

"I said to myself, 'These look like my numbers.' I tried to remain calm and sat down to watch some shows I had on my DVR".

"I still want to be me; I can't let money change me", Bailey said.

"Sure enough, I was blessed". Bailey will split the jackpot with a woman in Iowa who also got the winning numbers.

Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich, left, presents a check to Lerynne West, of Redfield, Iowa, center, for her share of a almost $700 million Powerball prize, Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive, Iowa. He plans to take the cash annuity option.

After checking the winning numbers that night online, he was shocked.

"God bless, she's still around", he said, noting the house would be somewhere in New York State or down south. "I also plan to give to the causes and organizations important to my family through our newly established Callum Foundation". And he's not planning to stop playing any time soon.

Bailey didn't come forward to claim his prize until after he met with a lawyer and financial adviser.

Mr Bailey, who wore dark sunglasses for the announcement, said he wished he could have kept his win quiet. "The victor has an option on the claim form to check "yes" or "no" for publicity", Armstrong said.
