Monkey snatches baby as mum breastfeeds him

The infant's mother was breastfeeding him at home in the city of Agra when the animal entered the house and grabbed him.

People nearby ran after the monkey, which "only dropped [the baby] when people chased it with sticks and threw stones at it", a police supervisor says, per the BBC.

Police said the injuries indicated the child had been bitten on the face.

This is the latest incident in a series of monkey attacks in the area.

Dhirendra Jumas, the baby's uncle, told the BBC the family was heartbroken and the baby's mother is distraught.


They also passed a resolution at the meeting, demanding adequate compensation to victims of monkey attacks.

According to the Agra Municipal Corporation officials, the number of monkeys in the city has gone up beyond 25,000. We have told the administration so many times to help us but they haven't done anything. Relevantly, two months ago, another toddler was attacked in the same colony by a monkey, however the victim survived and is now in hospital.

Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan were worst affected by monkeys who frequently attack tourists and pilgrims. "They are in all the five railway stations in the city, in hospitals, hotels and roads". "Monkey attacks have become so frequent that women and children are reluctant to move around freely", he said.

He said monkeys are becoming increasingly aggressive as they have been displaced from their natural habitats.

Some local organizations are calling for authorities to compensate monkey attack victims, for the animals to be sterilized and for their exclusion from legislation protecting wildlife, Singh said.
