John Lewis has finally shared its full 2018 Christmas advert after speculation arose that it would star Elton John. In the present day, Elton reflects on his life while sat at his first piano.

The ad entitled The Boy and the Piano features one of his biggest hits "Your Song". "That's the magical feeling we wanted to bring to life this year", explains Craig Inglis, customer director at John Lewis.

The festive ad tells how one gift in particular inspired and influenced the course of a little boy's life.... and that little boy just happens to be Elton John, with the soundtrack using his classic track, Your Song.

In a shift in media strategy, John Lewis employees will begin sharing the 140-second ad, created by adam&eveDDB in collaboration with Rocket Entertainment, at 6am before it goes live on John Lewis's own digital channels and in shops at 8am.

The advert will first air on TV tonight at 9.15pm during Dark Heart on ITV, but keen-eared Coronation St and This Morning viewers may have noticed the themes were played exclusively on piano on Wednesday to tease the advert. We are so ready to step into Christmas... "It could nearly be anyone".

It's rumoured to be connected somehow to Sir Elton John, with ITV's This Morning dropping a teaser by mysteriously changing their theme tune.

The switch might be a reference to the supposed role for Elton John in the retailer's forthcoming Christmas ad.

While some praised it and said it made them cry (presumedly in a good way) many have criticised the ad for being too much about Elton John and not enough about Christmas.

And others pointed out that Elton John also has a biopic Rocketman coming out in May 2019, and that this advert is surely the ultimate promotional opportunity.
