The products being recalled include 1-pound packages of raw, ground turkey and were sold nationwide.

The recall affects four different types of Jennie-O turkey: Taco Seasoned, Italian Seasoned, 85% Lean, and 93% Lean.

The following products are subject to recall.

The overall outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella reading, ongoing since November 2017, has made at least 164 people ill, with a third having needed hospitalization, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation notice on November 8. The ongoing hunt has found the salmonella strain in raw turkey pet food, ground turkey, turkey patties, and in live turkeys, indicating "it might be widespread in the turkey industry". Due to this investigation, additional products may also be recalled.

It's unclear where the turkey at the center of this outbreak came from, as there doesn't appear to be one centralized distributor, and the USDA is (somewhat controversially) not naming particular brands. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Most people recover without treatment.

These instances of salmonella poisoning killed one person in California and sent sixty-three to the hospital, according to the CDC.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers.

"In the meantime, it's important that consumers know they can purchase and safely consume these products", the agency added. Without a source or supplier of the product or products that are making people sick, officials say the best advice for consumers is to handle raw turkey carefully - including washing their hands, cutting boards and other utensils after touching raw turkey - and to cook it thoroughly to prevent illness.

FSIS cautions that Salmonella is prevalent and can be present in raw poultry and meat and that no raw poultry or meat is sterile. No one should be eating partially cooked or raw turkey.

The raw turkey products were produced on September 11, 2018.
