"There is no excuse for such brutality against these lovely animals", the Marine Animal Rescue said on its Facebook page.

The dolphin's remains were found on Manhattan Beach about 20 miles south of Los Angeles, El Segundo-based Marine Animal Rescue wrote on Facebook on Friday.

They then took the body for an animal autopsy which revealed it had died from a gunshot wound.

And though he's never seen an instance like this one before, Wallerstein told NBC News that it could be the sign a bigger problem. Federal authorities announced in July that they were looking for information on whoever was responsible.

Although Wallerstein noted that dolphins normally don't interfere with humans fishing, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in July that the wild animals sometimes learn this kind of behavior when people feed them.

"I've had sea lions shot but never had a dolphin", he said.
