"I remain humbled by your support and the great honor the people of Florida have shown me as I prepare to serve as your next governor", he said in his statement, inviting Gillum "to join me in the days ahead in a conversation about the future of our great state".

Adds Gillum, "This fight for Florida continues and I just wanted to thank you all for being along with us for at least this part of the journey, but the journey continues".

DeSantis said on Twitter, 'This was a hard-fought campaign.

Despite a Republican winning the race for governor, counties across the state are still in the middle of a hand recount for two statewide contests, including the race for U.S. Senate.

Counties have until noon on Sunday to file their official results, but it appears the gap is too far for Nelson to close.

His second concession speech was conciliatory, unlike that of fellow Democrat and Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams, who ended her campaign on Friday with a blistering diatribe claiming voter suppression as a possible reason for her loss in that election. "I encourage ya'll to keep fighting for what we believe in". The machine recount had DeSantis still leading by over 3,000 votes.

Gillum was still trailing DeSantis by 33,683 votes, according to the official recount.

Of the more than 8 million votes cast, DeSantis holds a 0.41 per cent lead. Bill Nelson was only gaining a few hundred votes in his bitter contest with outgoing Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican.

At least 44 out of 67 counties have finished their hand recount in the Senate race. Local canvassing boards only review ballots where a vote was not recorded by voting machines. Once that recount was complete, if the differences in any of the races are 0.25 percentage points or less, a hand recount is ordered.

Vote-counting issues have plagued Broward County for at least the past 14 years, dating back to one year after Snipes took over as County Supervisor of Elections in 2003.
