"He's a Hillary Clinton backer and an Obama-backer, and frankly. wouldn't it have been nice if we got Osama bin Laden a lot sooner than that?"

"Well, I think you will see that happen", the president said after the interviewer reminded that Obama and former President George W Bush had each visited soldiers in war zones.

William McRaven lashed out at Donald Trump again Sunday, saying his behavior is the "greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime" after the president criticized McRaven for failing to bring Osama bin Laden to justice sooner.

"Hillary Clinton fan", Trump interjected as Wallace brought up McRaven's comments.

Trump responded with a "they took him down - but" and then continued to point out how much aid the US gave Pakistan. After Trump revoked former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan's security clearance in the summer, McRaven wrote an article in The Washington Post defending Brennan as a man of unparalleled integrity and asked the president to revoke his clearance, as well, in solidarity.

Trump ignored him and continued his attack.

This isn't the first time that tension between Trump and retired military officers has spilled into public. "But living in Pakistan right next to the military academy".

Wallace pressed Trump on the 2011 mission.

"He's not a war hero".

"You saw we put on very heavy sanctions, massive sanctions on a large group of people from Saudi Arabia", Trump said.

Later Sunday afternoon, McRaven responded to Trump labeling him a Democrat and said he stood by his initial comments.

In the speech a year ago, delivered shortly after Trump's inauguration, McRaven said Trump's assertion that the news media "is the enemy of the American people" was perhaps "the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime".

"I did not back Hillary Clinton or anyone else", McRaven, who oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, told CNN.

The dust up occurred over Trump's attacks on the press, which were the topic of discussion when McRaven was mentioned.
