A gunman opened fire Monday at a hospital in the USA city of Chicago, police said, adding that there were reports of "multiple victims" including a wounded officer in "critical condition".

Chicago police say an officer has been shot during an active-shooting incident at a hospital on the city's South Side. He said at least one "possible offender is shot" but no details were immediately released.

There were "Reports of multiple victims" in the attack, Guglielmi said in a tweet.

He said he saw the gunman reload, fire again at the person on the ground and then go inside the hospital where more shots were fired.

"A #ChicagoPolice officer has been shot in the active shooter incident at Mercy Hospital". The department says there are "reports of multiple victims". "It's like a movie scene", Gray said. He said the shooter and the woman had been speaking before the shooting, but he didn't know if they knew each other.

One employee of the hospital's family clinic heard eight or nine shots. She said that at one point, she heard five shots in quick succession, but that the gunshots stopped after police arrived.

"I am scared as hell. That could have been us back there and if any bullets had pierced the wall we all would have been hurt", Thompson said.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports a massive police presence near the hospital, and police are asking people to stay away from the area.
