One dead as landlside derails train in Spain

The commuter train, carrying 150 passengers, crashed at 6.15am as a result of a landslide, according to local reports.

One person was killed and six injured on Tuesday after a commuter train derailed near Barcelona due to a landslide caused by heavy rains, emergency services and Spain's rail operator said.

Northern Spain has been battered by heavy rain in the last few days triggering floods and landslides.

A Renfe spokesperson said: "The train service has been suspended between Terrassa and Manresa because of a landslide which has caused a train to derail".

Pictures and videos show the wreckage of the train, with carriages sitting at an angle on the tracks as passengers were evacuated.

Commuters were urged to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

The Catalan civil protection agency said one person had died, three others were injured and 41 sustained light wounds.

Eleven people were taken to hospital, while police set up an emergency facility at a nearby sports centre where psychologists were offering counselling.
