- A father is facing charges after police say his 6-year-old daughter strangled her 1-year-old brother with a seat belt while they were left alone in a auto.

Adrian Dreshuan Middleton was charged Friday in the May 20 killing in Houston.

Middleton told officers he provided his children with snacks and water, and left on the air conditioning and a movie while he visited the store.

Middleton initially told police that he left his children in vehicle seats and "peeked out of the store window" to check on them as he shopped, but later admitted that the children were not in auto seats, and surveillance footage showed he stayed about an hour longer in the store than he'd previously claimed.

She told police that she had been playing with her brother and got angry when he wouldn't stop crying. She said she wrapped the seat belt around her brother and thought he had fallen asleep.

No arrest has been made.

When the father returned to the auto in the parking lot, his daughter was crying and told her father that she had done "something bad" the outlet reported. He said he occasionally "peeked out of the store window to check on them". He said his daughter told him she had to go to the bathroom and that she did something bad. Later he saw the toddler was in the rear seat with a seatbelt wrapped around his neck. The father told investigators he called 911 and attempted CPR until the ambulance arrived.

The incident occurred when Middleton was inside the second venue, Thrift Family Store.

The little boy was later pronounced dead at Texas Children's Hospital. She will not face charges because of her age, Houston police said. The boy's death was ruled homicide by strangulation.

Middleton turned himself into police custody Monday afternoon.
