It's hard to find a more flawless fit than Paul Goldschmidt to the St. Louis Cardinals in the final year prior to his free agency.

In return, pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a compensation draft pick are heading to Arizona.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons and he's a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) NL Silver Slugger award victor and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient.

"We've been busy this offseason working to upgrade our lineup", said John Mozeliak, the club's president of baseball operations, "and today we are excited to announce the acquisition of one of the game's premier players in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt".

In 2018, Goldschmidt hit.290 with 83 RBI and 33 home runs. Given his status as a six-time National League All-Star, his price tag will remain high, despite the fact his contract will expire after next season. After going 7-2 with a 3.88 ERA, Weaver followed that up with a record of 7-11 and an ERA of 4.95.
