Not only did the actor join Instagram, but he also confirmed his role as Mysterio in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Far From Home. But now at last, it seems we have confirmation, from the horse's (evil magician's) mouth. Gyllenhaal has joined Instagram, and his first post is very much a tease over his role in Far From Home.

The eight-second video shows Gyllenhaal holding up Amazing Spider-Man #311 (a classic), which featured Mysterio's return to the Wall-Crawler's life.

He captioned the video: "I just realised I'm not playing Spider-Man". However, the actor and the studio behind the upcoming superhero film have been mum on the topic.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "I would say, with John Watts who directed the movie, what makes this instalment of that franchise so great is that there is an intimacy to it. That's what it feels like when you're working".

News broke back in May that Gyllenhaal had been tapped to play villain Mysterio in the new Spider-Man film, but both Marvel and the actor himself have been quiet on that - until now.

His appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home marks the character's live-action debut.

In the comic, Mysterio tries to convince Spidey he caused a man's death, The Hollywood Reporter reports, noting that it's unclear if this plot will carry over into the film.

Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is due to be released on 5 July, 2019.
