But the early reaction to Living Coral has been positive so far - Glamour called it a "fantastic makeup shade", while GQ suggested that the warm, mellow hue "will cheer you up".

Pantone took its inspiration from under the sea, to reveal Living Coral (Pantone 16-456) as 2019's Colour of the year.

Before Ultra Violet was chosen for 2018, there was Greenery the year before.

"Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity". The color authority has bestowed the honorable title on a special hue every December for the past 20 years, taking into account fashion, decorating, design and cultural trends, as well as "how colors can embody our collective experience and reflect what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time", according to press release from Pantone. 'That's the influence of social media because people want things to stand out.

Since naming cerulean blue the color of 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has been passing the crown to a new shade each year, basing its choice on trends observed in a wide variety of areas - including "entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations".

"Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral", Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a statement. Living Coral's pink-orange overtones and golden undertones offer a kind of balance that stark marigold yellow lacks; combined, they promise to leave our 2019 wardrobes better, brighter and more dynamic than they found them. "Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour". "With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial PANTONE Living Coral hit a responsive chord".
