Cohen talked with Trump about meeting Putin during campaign

Mueller is investigating whether there was collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, which USA intelligence agencies charge mounted an influence operation to sway the vote to Trump over his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

"When you look at what the prosecutors did in the Southern District of NY they allege that Donald Trump directed two campaign finance violations".

The White House similarly dismissed that filing, arguing it "says absolutely nothing about the President".

Cohen and Manafort are among five former Trump associates whom prosecutors have accused of lying either to federal investigators or to Congress. He has said he did so to stay in sync with Trump's political messaging, and that he consulted with the White House while preparing to testify to Congress. Cohen also said he discussed the project with Trump during the presidential campaign, undercutting the then-Republican presidential candidate's statements that he didn't have any deals in Russian Federation.

Mueller said on Friday that Cohen repeated his false statements about the project in his first meeting with Mueller's office, admitting the truth only in a later meeting in September after he had pleaded guilty to the separate NY charges.

Mueller said that discussions about the potential Moscow development were relevant to the investigation because they occurred "at a time of sustained efforts by the Russian government to interfere with the US presidential election".

Dean, who was Nixon's former White House counsel, said on Erin Burnett OutFront that Cohen had "implicated Trump directly".

The filings, in cases involving Cohen and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, capped a dramatic week of revelations in Mueller's probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

They also suggest that special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into Cohen's lies to the public, which sets a bad precedent for Trump.

The commander-in-chief vowed his lawyers would produce a "major Counter Report" to rebut Mueller's findings, as and when he delivers them.

A heavily redacted court filing said that Manafort's "lies" included untruths about his dealings with Konstantin Kilimnik, a business associate who United States officials suspect is a Russian intelligence operative, and about his contacts with Trump administration officials after striking a plea agreement.

The Michael Cohen sentencing memo, as many legal analysts have noted, says the President directed Cohen to make those payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

In late November, prosecutors revealed that Manafort had repeatedly lied to them but did not say about what.

Manafort, who has pleaded guilty to several counts, violated his plea agreement by then telling "multiple discernible lies" to prosecutors, they said. Cohen admitted last week to lying to Congress by saying discussions about a Trump Tower in Moscow ended in January 2016 when in fact they stretched into that June, well into the US campaign.

Prosecutors said the court's Probation Department estimated that federal sentencing guidelines call for Cohen to serve at least four years in prison.

"While Cohen - as his own submission makes clear - already enjoyed a privileged life, his desire for even greater wealth and influence precipitated an extensive course of criminal conduct", they said.

Considering that cooperation, Mueller suggested the sentence for lying to Congress run concurrently with the sentence in the NY case.
