A 26-year-old man is now being held in connection with the murder, Det Insp Beard added.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has seen any items matching this description over the past week.

Scott Beard, the Auckland Police's detective inspector, said he could not confirm if Millane left the hotel.

Grace, 22, was last seen wearing a black dress with white sneakers on Queen Street, in Auckland's CBD, at around 9.41pm last Saturday.

Police have also released photos of a silver necklace with a round green stone and pale pink Casio Baby-G watch belonging to Ms Millane. "At this point, we hold grave concerns for her safety".

A 26-year-old man - who was with Miss Millane before she went missing - is being held in Auckland in connection with the murder. He also said investigators were looking into her credit card activity to see the last time she made a transaction.

Grace Millane, 22, was last seen on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.

"The family are devastated, everybody who is a parent out there will understand what this family is going through".

Her father David Millane fronted a press conference at Auckland Central Police Station on Friday after flying to New Zealand from his home town of Essex in the United Kingdom.

Police believe Millane may have the items with her.

New Zealand Police continue to examine hundreds of hours of CCTV footage.

The news comes hours after her family said they were "staying very positive" as the search for her continued.

"Many of these calls have been from members of the public, offering accommodation and assistance to the Millane family".

Described as "fun loving, outgoing and [a] family-orientated person", Millane was never out of contact with family and friends for this long, her family said.

Miss Millane, who graduated from the University of Lincoln in September, had been travelling alone in New Zealand for two weeks, following a six-week group trip through South America.

New Zealand Police released a CCTV image of Ms Millane on Thursday.

"We thought maybe it's just the time zone, sort of catching up, but we looked into it and realised her messages hadn't been read or delivered".
