"It's a big challenge, but also the logical next step in my career".

It was tempting to say that Ralph Hasenhuttl now knows the scale of the challenge that faces him at Southampton but the truth is the new manager was already painfully aware.

Hasenhuttl attracted Saints' interest through his success at his previous club RB Leipzig, guiding them to second in the Bundesliga in the 2016/17 season and the Europa League quarter-finals last term.

Insisting he will look to continue the club's record of promoting from the academy, Hasenhuttl said: "We've just had a look at the players we have now; I want to bring them to their limits". It's a bit back to the roots for me. The step is not the easiest one, but I never want it easy in my life. It showed me the relationship is good, but they have to accept another style of footballIt is a results business and we have to get them as soon as possible.

The engaging Hasenhuttl, who joked that his surname translates into English as "rabbit hutch", fired a word of warning that he will ship out any players not ready for hard work.

"The first target is to get out of this relegation zone. The near future has to be about moving as quickly as we can", he said. "I think he set marks in Germany with his kind of football and that really influenced my style, absolutely". If you have the chance to do that, okay.

Mark Hughes was dismissed following the 2-2 draw against Manchester United, which left the club in 18th place in the Premier League, and Hasenhuttl will officially begin the role on Thursday, the day after Southampton's clash at Tottenham.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has warned he will trim Southampton's squad before seeking new signings in the January transfer window.

Pompey go in search of an eighth consecutive win in all competitions when they host Southend. "It will be a hard-working way", Hasenhuttl said.

'Last year I had a fantastic Champions League team, we were on a very high technical level.
