Manchester City nearing £6m signing of US goalkeeper Zach Steffen

Zack Steffen has reportedly completed his move from Columbus Crew to Manchester City, although he is likely to be sent out on loan initially.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper will join the Premier League champions for a transfer fee of $7.5 milion (£6m) that could rise to $10m if Steffen reaches certain incentives.

With Steffen unlikely to succeed in his quest to secure a United Kingdom work permit, the American goalkeeper is expected to be sent out on loan, with La Liga side Girona a leading candidate to be his next destination. LaLiga side Girona, one of City's sister clubs, are thought to be his most likely destination though Patrick Vieira - who previously managed City Football Group's New York City FC - is also said to be interested in taking him to current club, OGC Nice.

City can not complete the deal until the January transfer window opens.

As reported by Telegraph Sport last month, City are eager to sign the reigning MLS goalkeeper of the year.

Steffen is also a US worldwide.

Should he fail to obtain a work permit, Steffen could re-apply next year.

A work permit seems unlikely right away, and so the highly-rated goalkeeper will nearly certainly head out on loan, with Patrick Vieira's Nice a possible destination.

In the long-term, Steffen is expected to become Ederson's back-up goalkeeper, appearing in cup competitions and providing competition for the Brazilian stopper.
