Skoda will also launch a compact SUV on this platform in 2019.

The new hatchback comes with what Skoda calls "a more emotional" design language. Depending on the variant, the Scala will get wheels measuring between 15 - 18 inches in diameter.

Skoda chief executive Bernhard Maier said: "We are starting a new chapter in Skoda's compact auto range with the new Skoda Scala". The boot can be optioned with an electric tailgate opening and closing function.

The Scala - whose name, fact fans, comes from the Latin for "ladder" - marks a bit of a design revolution for Skoda, featuring a prominent, aggressive grille and the Skoda name spelt out across its boot lid. The model is nearly 2 meters wide (1,988mm with mirrors), has a 2,649mm wheelbase and measures 4,362mm from bumper to bumper.

As reported, the all-new cabin gains a segment-leading 9.2-inch information display at the top of the centre stack, and the 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster is offered as an option.

At Skoda Scala one of the largest trunk among the hatchbacks of the C-class: its volume 467 liters in the normal state and 1410 litres with the folded rear seats.

Engine choice at launch will be a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol with 94bhp or 114bhp, a 1.45 litre petrol with 148bhp and a 1.6 litre diesel with 114bhp, with a five-speed manual only on the smallest petrol, a six-speed manual on the rest of the range with a seven-speed DCT option.

The new model is based on Volkswagen Group's ubiquitous MQB platform and it has grown in all dimensions, including length (4362mm, +58mm) width (1793mm, +87mm), height (1471mm, +12mm) and wheelbase (2649mm, +47mm). The diesels will comprise of 1.6-litre turbo-diesel with nearly 90bhp on tap. There are three gasoline units: an entry-level 1.0-liter TSI three-cylinder producing 95 PS (94 hp), a mid-range 1.0-liter TSI with 115 PS (113 hp) and a top-of-the-line 1.5-liter TSI four-cylinder that makes 150 PS (148 hp). This sportier version will also offer four driving modes for better throttle response and steering. It is an all-new model that sets benchmarks within its segment in terms of technology, safety and design.

In certain markets, the Skoda Scala hatchback will be offered with several driver assist systems as standard including lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking. The vehicle sits above the Fabia, is based on the MQB A0 platform, and brings a lot of new features to the segment. Other safety systems that can be had are driver alert fatigue detection system, adaptive cruise control (up to 210 km/h), park assist with optional rear-view camera and manoeuvre assist.
