Sheriff Adam Christianson of Stanislaus County said at a news conference Friday that authorities believed Perez Arriaga was trying to escape to Mexico when he was arrested that day at a home in Lamont, California, about 10 miles outside Bakersfield. Police said the shooting occurred after Singh pulled Perez Arriaga's vehicle over because Singh suspected that Perez Arriaga was driving under the influence. Over his police radio, Singh called out "shots fired", and as police arrived at the scene of the traffic stop, they found the officer with a gunshot wound.

32 year-old Gustavo Perez Arriaga was arraigned in a Modesto courtroom Wednesday.

Officer Ronil Singh of the Newman Police Department, California, is pictured in this undated photo released by Merced Police Department.

Cpl. Singh was also an immigrant, coming to the USA legally from his native Fiji to pursue his dream of serving in law enforcement, authorities have said. At least three aliases were listed on Arriaga's criminal complaint, and authorities have said that he also used several different names on social media. The case has been suspended until he receives a mental health evaluation.

Two of Perez Arriaga's brothers, his girlfriend and four others were arrested on suspicion of helping him evade authorities.

Arriaga crossed into Arizona from Mexico a couple of years ago and had been working as a farm laborer in California's Central Valley, Christianson said. He has two previous drunken driving arrests, authorities say.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff Department has set up a memorial fund for the Singh family.

Perez Arriaga was arrested Friday in the December 26 shooting of Newman police Cpl.

"We remain deeply concerned that California's sanctuary laws continue to undermine public safety and cause preventable crimes by restricting law enforcement cooperation and allowing public safety threats back into the community to re-offend", an ICE spokesperson told Breitbart News in a statement.

The day after the shooting, as authorities scoured the state for Arriaga, Trump tweeted, "Time to get tough on Border Security".

Singh was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, leaving behind his wife Anamika and their newborn five-month-old son.

Stephen Foley, the defendant's lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday evening.
