Nokia 8.1 Plus is the company’s most modern-looking phone yet

The first thing we noticed about these renders is that Nokia is following in the vein of other recent devices and using a pinhole for the forward-facing camera to allow for a almost bezel-less display on its next smartphone.

As for its availability in Malaysia, the Nokia 8.1 will be heading to retailers in Malaysia on 18 January with a price tag of RM 1699. Unlike Nokia's most recent devices which adopted the notch, though, this particular model will feature a display hole in the top-left corner.

The renders show the Nokia 8.1 Plus will have a USB-C port on the bottom with a loudspeaker to keep it company, while the top side houses a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The renders have been provided by 91Mobiles in collaboration with OnLeaks. As usual, Nokia is part of the "Android One" program, which just means the phone has stock Android and a reliable update schedule. The main difference is that the phone shown in the leaked video and images has a punch-hole display and the rear camera setup also looks slightly different.

2019 is still in its early days, but even so, we're already expecting a lot of phones to ship this year with a hole-punch style notch. Its lineup remains as confusing and complicated as ever, though, especially when you compare this design to the upcoming Nokia 9.

If these renders of the alleged Nokia 8.1 Plus end up being accurate, HMD Global (along with many other smartphone OEMs) are going to be using this same technique for their phone. If you want a high-end Nokia phone, it seems like you would want the front of the Nokia 8.1 Plus combined with the back from the Nokia 9.
