Stargazers in Oklahoma City ready for total lunar eclipse viewings in January

But this year's first lunar Eclipse will be observed on January 21. The Earth will come between the Sun and the Moon in just the right way so that the Earth's shadow is cast entirely across its moon.

The annular eclipse occurs when the circumference of the sun shines brightly from behind the moon. "This is why a lunar eclipse is often called a blood moon".

So, what is a partial solar eclipse and will it be visible in India?

"During totality (the time when the entire moon is covered by Earth's shadow) the lunar surface turns a copper orange due to sunlight refracting or passing through our atmosphere much like those hot summer sunsets on Earth". It will not be visible in India, Pakistan, Europe and North America. By 3:40pm EST, the partial eclipse will be over as well, and the moon's shadow will have passed across the continent and back over to the Atlantic Ocean. However, the highlight of the year for eclipse-chasers will be July 2, 2019, when a total solar eclipse occurs over the South Pacific, Chile and Argentina. From 12:55 to 5:50 p.m. ET. Each observatory lies within the path of the eclipse and is sure to be sharing images of the event. This event blocks the Sun's light from directly falling on the Moon making the moon look red.

In the United Kingdom you will have the best chance to get a glance of the astrological event at 5.15am on January 21. "I haven't yet made my mind [where to watch from], it could be Saudi Arabia or Qatar if I decide to go for it at sunrise with questionable seeing", says Jubier. "Or else UAE or Oman if I play it safe and conventional, or want to combine it with some sightseeing".

The next total solar eclipse to hit the United States will happen on April 8, 2024 and will pass across the eastern part of the country.
