"What we want from Apple is something that makes us emotional, even unconsciously-say, truly lovely and sophisticated design that we can't resist", said Atsushi Osanai, a professor at Waseda University in Tokyo who is an expert in electronics.

Apple is planning to release three new iPhones to succeed its 2018 lineup, indicating the iPhone XR - unlike the SE and 5C before it, isn't simply a one-off.

While sales of the iPhone XR have reportedly been sluggish and WSJ says Apple isn't too keen on the prospect of releasing another entry-level iPhone, it may be too late for the company to switch up its plans.

The firm's most expensive handset, the XS Max, will feature a triple rear camera and the lower-priced models will be equipped with a double rear camera, sources told the paper.

Sony last month said it was ramping up production of next-gen 3D sensors for mobile cameras after having received interest from manufacturing partners.

Apple's purported focus on cameras shows that it wants to keep the iPhone competitive with rival smartphones that heavily emphasize the importance of photography chops.

Apple, like other handset makers, has been grappling with the reality that consumers aren't upgrading their phones as often as they once did. That led Apple to aggressively market the iPhone XR on its website for $449, about $300 less than its official sticker price. The Cupertino-based company is said to be bringing new camera features to the upcoming iPhone models, including a possible triple camera setup in the iPhone XS Max successor.

The report adds that the cheapest model will stick with an LCD screen, while the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will of course use OLED, just like the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. And with iPhone sales declining, you can be sure there will be a bunch of ridiculous rumours to build up hype for the next iPhones.
