Fabregas is now joining up with Thierry Henry, a former teammate and current manager of the municipality club, who was the Spaniard's captain at Arsenal.

"Cesc Fabregas has, today, completed a permanent transfer to Monaco", Chelsea said on their website, just as Ligue 1 Monaco tweeted a video of Fabregas with a voice-over saying "now it's time".

"I'm here to help the team, I'm looking forward to starting".

Chelsea have paid a heartfelt tribute to Fabregas following his departure.

"There is no doubt Fabregas's place in the Chelsea history books is assured given his achievements over the past four-and-a-half seasons", a club statement read. "I am very excited".

But he was not a regular this season for the English Premier League side under its new Italian coach Maurizio Sarri.

The 2010 World Cup victor has penned a three-year deal with Monaco, who has been struggling in the French top flight this season.

Last weekend, an emotional Fabregas applauded Chelsea's home fans at Stamford Bridge after making his last appearance for the club in an FA Cup match against Nottingham Forest.

Fabregas will be required to make an immediate impact for Henry's men, who now languish second from bottom of the Ligue 1 table and face the threat of relegation.

Fabregas arrived at Stamford Bridge as a 2012 European Championship and 2010 World Cup victor with Spain.

Henry has signed two defenders so far during the transfer window: 22-year-old Fode Ballo-Toure from Lille and 36-year-old Brazilian Naldo from Schalke.
