Police attended Derby's training ground and told Rams boss Frank Lampard to halt training as they dealt with the extraordinary issue.

Derby are now in sixth position, while Leeds are league leaders just eight points ahead.

"Officers conducted routine checks which were all above board".

Derby County have confirmed that police were contacted after a employee of Leeds United was caught "acting suspiciously" outside of their training ground. Despite media reports, no damage to the fence was found, and the man was stopped outside the grounds.

A club statement said: "It has since been confirmed to Derby County that the individual concerned is an employee of the footballing staff at Leeds United Football Club".

An investigation has been launched to determine whether the man was trying to garner information for Leeds or works for the club.

No arrests were made, according to police, and the man was sent on his way.

Derby travel to Championship leaders Leeds in a crucial top-of-the-table clash on Friday night and the local constabulary put out a tweet saying '#spyingischeating' after the incident.
