Nurse causes 'catastrophic injury to baby during delivery'

Both men have been suspended and an internal investigation is now underway.

The woman was then taken to Jawahar Hospital for further treatment after staff said there had been a "complication" with the birth.

The father of the baby has alleged that the hospital staff tried to conceal the matter and didn't inform his family about the botch-up and tried to hide the part of the baby's body which was pulled out.

The incident was reported from Jaisalmer's Ramgarh.

Barmer: In a awful case of medical negligence, a woman's baby was split into half during delivery in government hospital of Ramgarh area, Rajasthan.

The man in charge of the heath centre in Ramgargh, Dr Nikhil Sharma, said he wasn't present at the time of the incident.


Health minister Raghu Sharma said, "Those guilty will be punished and strict action will be taken after investigation". According to the doctor, he stabilised the mother's health and "referred her to Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur".

The Hindustan Times said the nurse had pulled "so hard while attempting to deliver the baby that it broke into two parts". He led the police to the spot where he had hidden the torso.

On Wednesday, a case was filed under IPC sections 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety) against the two staffers of Ramgarh PHC. The doctors informed the woman's relatives and the family members. The police, acting on the woman's complaint, questioned the male nurse about the botched-up procedure.

Dr Usha Duggad, principal medical officer at Jawahar government hospital said it was a rare case.

The shocking incident took place on January 6. "It was a pre-term baby", he added. "I will prepare a complete report on the incident and hand it over to health directorate", he said.
