A Republican congressman from Iowa who has been accused in the past of racism asked in an interview published on Thursday how the terms "white nationalist" and "white supremacist" became offensive to Americans. Mr. King said. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"

King's standing in the Republican Party was imperiled even before his latest remarks.

In a New York Times article on King's penchant for spouting demonizing rhetoric about immigrants, King himself told the newspaper that he doesn't understand when "that language" became "offensive".

"Further, I condemn anyone that supports this evil and bigoted ideology which saw in its ultimate expression the systematic murder of six million innocent Jewish lives".

King's statement referenced the nation's founding documents. I am dedicated to keeping America this way. "I am simply a Nationalist", he said, not a white nationalist or white supremacist. "I think it was important that he rejected that kind of evil because that's what it is, it's evil ideology".

King's statement came after lawmakers from both parties condemned his earlier comments.

"This is an embrace of racism, and it has no place in Congress or anywhere", Representative Justin Amash, the Republican from MI, tweeted. "Steve's language is reckless, wrong, and has no place in our society", the California Republican said in a statement.

Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) called for the House to formally censure King for his remarks.

That quote from King inspired Andrew Anglin, the founder of neo-Nazi news and commentary site Daily Stormer, to write: "Steve King is basically an open white nationalist at this point". It noted that years ago he touted a 12-foot border wall, and repeatedly blasted illegal immigration.

Randy Feenstra, a Republican state senator, announced Wednesday that he plans to run against King in 2020.
