According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Whitesells have been guests at the Bezos' home in Seattle on multiple occasions and were even photographed with Bezos at a party during the 2016 awards show season.

They had been separated but were now making it official, their statement said.

Jeff and Lauren reportedly got close after Lauren and her husband separated. She also founded Bystander Revolution, an organization dedicated to combatting bullying that counts Monica Lewinsky and actress Lily Collins as ambassadors.

"As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have made a decision to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends", they wrote.

She and Bezos were seen together in Los Angeles on Sunday, the day of the Golden Globes and at Amazon's after-party, the Post reported.

She's been labeled the new first lady of Amazon, but who is Jeff Bezos' new girlfriend Lauren Sanchez? She also has a 17-year-old son with ex Tony Gonzalez.

"Bezos, 54, and Sanchez, 49, have both denied cheating on their spouses since details of their romance emerged on Wednesday evening", the Daily Mail reported, adding that "the pair met several times for illicit trysts as often as six times in two weeks", and with Bezos taking Sanchez "on vacations on his $65million private jet", and sending her "erotic selfies that were "too explicit" even for the magazine to print".

The divorce is further complicated by the fact the couple reside in Washington in the USA which is a "community property state" which means all assets and debts accrued during the marriage are considered equally owned by both spouses, unless a prenuptial agreement states otherwise.

Bezos and MacKenzie announced their divorce in a joint statement on Wednesday following a trial separation.

Today, TMZ report that the couple did not have a pre-nuptial agreement and a significant chunk of Bezo's fortune could be on the line.

The divorce deal could significantly dilute his ownership and control of Amazon. "We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other".

Even if MacKenzie Bezos should eventually depart with half of Bezos' wealth, valued at US$137 billion (NZ$202 billion) atop Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, the Amazon founder would remain among the top four most wealthy.

"After a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have chose to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends", the couple said in the statement issued today via the Amazon CEO's Twitter account.
