Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Says She’s Running for President

Tulsi Gabbard said in an interview on Friday that she has chose to run for the White House and will be make a formal announcement over the next week.

"I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", the Hawaii Democrat told CNN's Van Jones during an interview slated to air at 7 p.m. Saturday on CNN's "The Van Jones Show".

"I'm thinking through how I can best be of service and I'll make my decision based on that", she said. Gabbard said health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change would be central to her message, but cited one factor as paramount, asserting, "There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace".

Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gabbard was criticized in 2016 for traveling to Syria and meeting with President Bashar Assad, who has been accused of war crimes.

Gabbard, 37, who hasn't hesitated to criticize her party on worldwide and domestic issues, revealed her decision on CNN's 'Van Jones Show'.

Indeed, Gabbard has rankled some in her party for her unorthodox moves.

Inspired by the party's strong showing in the November midterms, a number of Democrats are eager to challenge Trump in the 2020 presidential election. California Sen. Kamala Harris, New Jersey Sen.

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard said. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) announced on New Year's Eve that she was forming a presidential exploratory committee. "Liberals think she's too conservative, conservatives think she's too liberal, and just about everyone thinks her coziness with Bashar al-Assad is disturbing". Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president.
