Several people were injured after a big explosion badly damaged a bakery in central Paris, smashing windows in surrounding buildings, reported AFP. The spokeswoman, who wasn't authorised to be publicly named, provided no further details. Paris police tweeted to warn the public to "avoid the area and allow the passage of the emergency vehicles".

Witnesses said they could hear screaming comes from the apartments above the bakery in the Rue de Trevise.

"Cars are overturned. glass broken everywhere".

The building is around the corner from the Folies-Bergere theatre and not far from the shopping district that includes the famed headquarters of Galeries Lafayette.

Weekly protests by the yellow vest movement, which is railing against the economic policies of French President Emmanuel Macron, were scheduled for Saturday.
