A bus crash at Westboro Station in Ottawa.

The collision happened around 3:50 p.m. Friday.

Mayor Jim Watson said two of the dead were riding the bus and one was on the platform at Westboro station, a major stop on the city's busway. Officials say a total of 25 patients were taken to hospital, 14 in critical condition and 11 in serious condition.

Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said the bus driver was arrested after the crash, but he declined to provide details on why she has been detained.

Witnesses told local media the OC Transpo Route 269 bus swerved moments before slamming into the bus shelter overhang at the Westboro station west of downtown.

Photos from the scene show that one side of second floor was partially crushed by the roof, and multiple people were being treated next to the bus. "I want to express my sorrow and condolences of the Ottawa police service and other emergency services".

He said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash.

An obviously distressed woman was seen being wheeled away from the bus on a stretcher by paramedics.

"This will be a long investigation", he said.

Part of the Transitway, a main artery for commuters, was closed in the aftermath of the accident, and police warned people to stay away from the area.

Buses are being detoured as a result of the crash, OC Transpo said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was devastated to hear of those who were killed and injured in the bus collision.

In 2013, another Ottawa double-decker bus broke through a warning gate and collided with a Via Rail train in suburban Barrhaven, killing six people as the train sheared off the front of the vehicle.
