On Thursday, authorities announced Closs, 13, who disappeared in October, was found alive.

The man suspected of kidnapping a northwestern Wisconsin teenager and killing her parents with a shotgun almost three months ago appears to have led an unremarkable existence, blending into the state's vast north woods.

Neighbor Daphne Ronning told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Patterson's parents moved to Gordon about 15 years ago. Nutter said Jayme did not have a coat or gloves. "She's the one who helped us break this case", Fitzgerald said.

Jake Thomas Patterson is being held on kidnapping and homicide charges after his arrest Thursday.

A shotgun believed to have been used by Patterson to shoot open the door to the Closs' home has been recovered by officers.

There's no evidence Patterson knew the Closses or had previous contact with them, the sheriff said.

When police arrived at the home four minutes later, they found the parents, James and Denise Closs, shot dead.

"We still are serving the search warrant on the (Patterson) residence in Gordon, collecting evidence, bringing it back either here to the sheriff's department or to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab".

A picture circulated around social media of Closs smiling next to her aunt Jennifer Smith.

Both the woman and the neighbour recognised the teen immediately on Thursday due to the enormous public campaign following her disappearance, Fitzgerald said. Owner Karen Beeler said she's run the place for 22 years and had never heard of the family before Jake Patterson was arrested. She said they stole things and spent time in foster care.

They called for help.

Jayme Closs' suspected kidnapper had no prior criminal record, however, detectives are now looking into his brother who was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor. He worked for one day in 2016 at the same Jennie-O turkey plant in Barron as Jayme's parents. "We know he lived in that house alone", he said.

"He didn't know Jayme, he didn't know Denise or Jim", Naiberg said.

"There is a reunification process in place going on right now that includes medical mental evaluation, questioning by detectives and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, and then reunification with family".

"The suspect had specific intentions to kidnap Jayme and went to great lengths to prepare to take her", said Fitzgerald.

For months, thousands of people joined search parties as investigators received thousands of tips.

Closs was missing for almost three months when she approached a stranger in the small, isolated town of Gordon and pleaded for help.

"I'm lost and I don't know where I am, and I need help", Jayme told Nutter.

Closs was released from a Minnesota hospital Friday and is staying in Barron, Wisconsin, with an aunt.

Nutter took her to the nearby home of Peter and Kristin Kasinskas.

Patterson was scheduled for an initial court appearance on Monday.

"She said to us that, 'This person killed my parents and took me, ' " Kasinskas told CNN's Poppy Harlow. "She said that this person usually hides her or hides her when others are near, or when he has to leave the household".

The Kasinskas said Jayme's emotions were "pretty flat" while they waited for the police and she refused offers of food and water.

"I have no clue who they are", she said.
