Widespread flu activity reported

Meanwhile, the number of lab-confirmed flu cases totaled 1,268 as of January 19, with 224 people hospitalized with flu-like symptoms since the start of the flu season. That's the highest percentage compared to the rest of the state.

But some workplaces have been reporting an unseasonal spate of staff calling in sick with flu-like illnesses, after a relatively mild season last winter.

A total of 20 people have now died from the flu in IN during the 2018-2019 season, according to the state's department of health. The Centers Disease Control and Prevention says flu is now widespread in 45 states, including MI.

Grand Forks County has reported 142 cases.

It comes as Australia is on track to record its worst summer flu season in years, prompting a warning from doctors not to be complacent about vaccinations and hygiene.

Two more children have died in connection with the flu as activity picked up in the USA last week, according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationwide, 185 child deaths have been attributed to the flu - and about 80 percent of those kids had not received their flu shots.
