"All our prayers, all our hearts are with them", Yerlikaya said in reference to people who may still be trapped.

Kurum said the emergency teams are still "receiving sounds" suggesting signs of life from the under the rubble.

Rescuers are seen at the site of a collapsed residential building in the Kartal district, Istanbul, Feb. 7, 2019.

"We will work without interruption until the search and rescue operation is complete", Yerlikaya told reporters.

Yıldırım confirmed two people have died and six residents have been rescued from the rubble of the eight-story building, while noting that the building next to the collapsed compound has been evacuated as part of a security precaution after experts suspected that it might have been damaged during the collapse.

A textile workshop on the building's lower floor was empty at the time, local official Zeki Dag told local media earlier.
