According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gurira has signed a deal to return as katana-wielding zombie apocalypse survivor Michonne for "a handful of episodes" in Season 10 before making a likely transition to the spin-off movies that will reunite her with former costar Andrew Lincoln.

Recently, those rumors began to pick up steam as it appeared that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would conflict with Danai Gurira's schedule on the AMC series.

Danai Gurira is bidding farewell to the AMC show, Variety reports.

Lincoln's departure was compounded on Friday night when it was announced that the show's next season - Season 10 - will be the final one for Danai Gurira.

Her exit would be a massive blow for the show, following the recent departure of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes in season nine - who will reappear in a planned trilogy of movies.

AMC is now working on no less than three Walking Dead feature length films, which will star Andrew Lincoln. Right now, she's got a lot of opportunities and she needs to weigh what she feels is best for her. She's also set to star in Godzilla vs Kong in 2020. "But we certainly would want her on the show as long as she wants to be on it", Madden said. Like Rick, the character is still very much alive in the comics, so this will be another big diversion from the source material. "She is an incredibly valuable character and I'm really hoping she stays", he added.

She's since acted in a number of high-profile roles outside the dust-strewn wastes of the zombie-plagued apocalypse, including 2018 blockbusters Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
