The company has now delivered an update to ThisWeekinFM - including the effect the fire will have on the company's business.

In a statement, Ocado said on Wednesday morning: "While we are informed by the Fire Brigade that it is now under control, during the night part of the roof collapsed and there has been substantial damage to the majority of the building and its contents".

On Wednesday evening the fire service said properties will be evacuated within a 500-metre exclusion zone and a 1.6km stretch based on wind direction.

Local residents and workers are now able to access the affected area as normal.

British online supermarket Ocado said on Thursday the fire service was expected to remain at its badly damaged complex in southern England for at least the next few days as they continue to bring the blaze under control.

"Ocado has been working closely with the emergency services and other organisations".

The cause of the fire has not been established.

Ocado added that it was working to minimise disruption for customers by increasing capacity at its three other major United Kingdom facilities.

The fire, which started on Tuesday morning, was battled by around 200 firefighters overnight, with the online grocer expecting a fall in sales growth until it can move operations to other warehouses.

"This is obviously a bad event and thankfully no one has been hurt, although some firefighters have been treated for smoke inhalation".

It was not until 8:35am on Thursday February 7 that Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) confirmed that the evacuation area around fire site had been lifted. Roads around are the site were opened, although firefighting operations continued.

Homes have been evacuated because of the risk of a toxic cloud or large cylinder explosion at a large fire sweeping through an Ocado warehouse.

Chief Fire officer Neil Odbin from Hampshire Fire and Rescue has already revealed that the fire has spread into a second building on the site and efforts to extinguish the blaze are hampered due to the internals and dangers within the multi-million-pound warehouse.
