A record number of firearms were discovered in carry-on baggage at airports across the country past year, the Transportation Security Administration announced today in the agency's annual recap.

More than 86 percent of the guns found were loaded, according to the Transport Security Administration (TSA). Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport led the way with 298, 253 of which were loaded. "Even if a traveler has a concealed weapon permit, firearms are not permitted to be carried onto an airplane", the release said.

In May, the TSA announced that it had set the new daily record for the most guns seized in a day with 26 at 15 airports throughout the country.

And earlier in February 2018, it said it confiscated 104 firearms from carry-on bags in one week at USA airports, surpassing the previous weekly record of 96 set in 2017.

However, TSA also noted that a record number of travelers passed through airports in 2018, with 813.8 million people going through security screening. You don't just happen upon that.

The total number of firearms discovered at airport checkpoints has more than quadrupled over the last decade, climbing consistently year-over-year. That number is more than double compared to the number of guns confiscated in Atlanta the year before. TSA can impose civil penalties of up to $13,333 per violation, with higher penalties for repeat offenders.

Our investigation found that, in the vast majority of cases in 2017, it was men, and 63 percent were white.

Guns were found at 249 of the nation's 440 federalized airports. "Anything resembling an explosive item is prohibited in carry-on and checked bags".

"Oh, I'm troubled by that too".

Thursday's TSA report also outline other prohibited items seized at airports, including three smoke grenades found at Nashville International Airport in November.

In December, TSA agents discovered a bottle of lighter fluid on a passenger travelling from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and five replica mortar shells in a checked bag at Orlando International Airport.
